Talven Text, a typeface for body text

Talven Text

A typeface for body text. It has seven redrawn characters, a taller lowercase, and more room between words.

Talven Text is a modified version of Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, free under the SIL Open Font License. It is a prototype. No reader study has measured a benefit from it.

Seven characters, redrawn.

Talven Text starts from Atkinson Hyperlegible Next. A build script replaces seven outlines, raises the lowercase, and adds space. The solid shape is Talven Text. The red outline is the original.

Weight for the outline comparison
Cap height 668x-height 520Atkinson 496Baseline
Taller lowercase
The x-height goes from 496 to 520 units in a 1000-unit em. The cap height stays at 668.
More room
Each glyph is 10 units wider, split between its two sides. The word space is 24 units wider.
The rest is inherited
Kerning, accents, punctuation, and most shapes come from the original. The font log lists every change.

No setting is best for every reader. Change one control at a time, put another font next to it, and copy the CSS when the text is comfortable.

Letter spacing adds the same amount of word spacing, so words stay distinct. Both fonts use the same CSS size. Their letter heights can differ.

Talven Text

The path to the river begins at the end of the garden. In the early light, you can see small leaves caught in the fence and a thin line of water along the stones. A woman stops at the gate to open a letter. She reads it once, folds the paper, and looks back at the house. There is still time for a cup of tea before she leaves. At the bridge, the town starts to wake. A bicycle passes. Someone carries a box of apples into the shop. The river moves beneath them all, quiet and steady.

Select the Talven Text sample to type or paste your own text. It stays in this page.

Tell similar characters apart.

Some characters share a shape in many fonts. Blur both rows until one of them stops making sense. Blur is a rough stand-in for small sizes and distance. It is not a test of your eyesight or of the font.
